How Many People Vape?

In this section, we’ll cover some of the most frequently asked questions about vaping. After all, it’s important to know the truth about all aspects of e-cigarettes.

1. There were 41 million vape users worldwide in 2018.

(Source: SingleCare)

How many people vape in the world? Believe it or not, we don’t know the exact number. However, this stat from 2018 should give us an idea.

In comparison, there were only 7 million e-cigarette smokers in 2011, which means the number has increased by almost 600% in only seven years! Euromonitor estimated that in 2021, there could be 55 million worldwide vapers.

Would this be correct now? 2022 vaping statistics don’t have an answer yet, so it’s hard to tell, especially because of the ups and downs. While there are probably more adult vapers now, there could be fewer young smokers.

2. Among the biggest reasons why people vape are the lack of smoke and belief it’s healthier than actual cigarettes.

(Source: Johns Hopkins Medicine)

Why do people vape? It has been the rising trend for the last several years, yet many still can’t understand its appeal. We could attribute its success to these three major factors.

First, many people, starting with teens, believe smoking e-cigarettes is much healthier than their non-electrical counterparts. The reality is that they are only slightly healthier. Vape facts proved a long time ago that they can be just as harmful. Next, there is usually no smoke. The lack of smoke benefits everybody, but is most appealing to teen smokers. Finally, vaping devices are considerably cheaper, but that’s a story for another stat.

(Source: Johns Hopkins Medicine)

That myth has been long debunked by the Food and Drug Administration.

On the contrary, vaping statistics prove it’s actually more likely to turn people into smokers. That goes for both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. If you’re looking to stop smoking, you’re much better off considering one of the FDA-approved methods—mostly coming down to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

4. There have been 2,807 hospitalized cases as a consequence of lung injury due to vaping.

(Source: Johns Hopkins Medicine)

Has anyone died from vaping by 2022? Unfortunately, yes—the youngest victim was 15 years old, and the oldest 75. The next time somebody tells you vaping is healthy, show them this.

As of February 2020, 2,807 people were hospitalized because of vaping devices. Also, out of them, 68 were confirmed dead because of lung injuries by the end of the same month. Given the popularity of vaping, chances are there have already been confirmed vaping deaths in 2022.

How Many Teens Vape?

As we’ve already found out, vaping is appealing to people of all age groups. Still, one of these groups is bigger than the rest. Not young adults, but teenagers! If we had to take an educated guess about the reasons why it’s so popular, we would definitely point out its accessibility. The ability to buy everything online with no age restrictions and verifications makes it easier for teens to “stay in the trend.” Let’s learn more about it:

5. 27.5% of US high school students used vaping products in 2019.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

That’s every fourth high school student, and then some! Not surprising, considering how the popularity of vaping devices soared at the end of the 2010s. They were popular more than ever in early 2020, before the Coronavirus pandemic.

There’s seemingly a lot to highlight here while we wait for 2022 teenage vaping statistics. 26.5% of highschoolers were into disposable e-cigarettes, compared to only 2.4% in 2019. Only 19.6% of them vaped in 2020 after the pandemic… probably because they started spending more time with their parents.

6. In the same time period, the number of middle school e-cigarette smokers increased fivefold.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

Perhaps this is even more worrisome. The number of underaged vapers is definitely on a steady rise. Electronic cigarettes studies revealed that in 2019, only 3% of middle schoolers used them. However, right before COVID-19 emerged, this number soared to 15.2%—this makes for an increase of over 500%!

7. Teens aged 15 to 17 are 16 times as likely to be JUUL users than adults.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

How many teenagers vape? Truth Initiative hinted they were one of the biggest age groups in this regard in 2018.

Just like with other vaping devices, they are among the most prominent group of JUUL users. That’s probably because they are the most likely to begin with vaping, rather than smoking. 2019 vape facts suggest that JUUL is a good starting point. More than half of teen survey respondents claimed that they never lit up a cigarette before starting with it.

8. Within the month prior to TI’s research, 82.9% of young vapers used a flavored e-cigarette.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

Hardly anything is certain regarding teen vaping device use except this—among all types of vapes, flavored ones are very attractive with younger users. They may be even responsible for such a high percentage of young vapers. In a month preceding Truth Initiative’s research, around four out of five young vapers took a flavored e-cigarette.

Vape Demographics

Whichever demography vaping stats we’re talking about, teens will always be the dominant group. The same is true here, even though it seems adults are another prominent group of users.

9. Roughly every 20th American regularly uses a vaping device.

(Source: SingleCare)

That’s at least what the Annals of Internal Medicine deducted in 2018. With all these devices becoming more and more popular, the number of vapers is bound to increase. Their vape facts also show that every third vape user vapes daily. Additionally, 8% of Americans admitted to using a vaping product a week prior to Gallup’s 2019 research.

10. As of July 2021, 6% of all Americans vape.

(Source: Gallup)

Now that you know how many people practice vaping worldwide, let’s learn what percentage of adults vape in America?

A week before Gallup conducted its research in July 2021, 6% of all American adults claimed to have vaped. Interestingly enough, this number is less than the 2019 one, although the industry was much bigger in 2021. Also, 16% of them smoked a regular cigarette in 2019. These have been on a decline for quite a long time, but they’re not going anywhere just yet.

11. Most people who vape are aged 18 to 29.

(Source: SingleCare)

According to American vaping statistics, 20% of Americans in this age range have used vaping products. 16% of users are aged between 30 to 64 and less than 0.5% are 65 or above.

12. Young people who smoked e-cigarettes are seven times more likely to become smokers within one year.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

Contrary to popular belief, using a vaping device is not healthier than smoking. It can be in some cases, though it still is pretty unhealthy overall. Yet another, less popular risk to it, as shown by teen vaping statistics is that those who have ever smoked an e-cigarette are seven times more likely to become smokers. They usually do so within a year.

Vape Industry Statistics

This is an expectedly huge industry. With all these vape types, including e-cigs, how couldn’t it? More and more people are hopping onto the bandwagon. That makes these industry stats all the more important.

  1. Vaping devices are significantly cheaper than cigarettes.

(Source: Vaping Facts)

Although mostly vape-related websites tell this, one can’t argue with the facts. The cost of vaping vs smoking subject matter greatly favors the former.

Let’s say you smoke five times a day. According to a website called Vaping Facts, you can save up to $43 each week by making the switch. Even if you roll your own cigarettes, you’d still be up $33. Needless to say, the difference only further increases the more you smoke. For five smokes a day, it comes down to a $197 vs $2,455 comparison.

14. The vaping industry revenue might be near $105 billion by 2028.

(Source: Grand View Research)

Vaping devices are responsible for some incredible financial gains. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) goes up to as high as 30%! In 2021, the e-cigarette and vape market was worth $18.47 billion. By 2023, the vaping industry net worth could hover around $40 billion. If it keeps going with the same CAGR, it would be worth $104.51 billion in 2028.

15. JUUL’s e-cigarette market share has been 49.7% as of April 2021.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

It used to be much bigger (around 73% in 2019), it’s still the reigning e-cigarette company. Yet, after all these years, electronic cigarettes statistics show that a single company is dominating half of the entire market.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

The brand is so popular that its copies are also colloquially named JUUL. They’re also known as pod mods, however, as they have disposable mods filled with e-liquid. These interesting facts about vaping lead us to brands like Suorin Drop, Vuse Alto, and myblu. Not only did they copy the e-liquid idea, they all have a similar design to the real JUUL.

17. Some other JUUL copies are even compatible with it.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

If you’re already using the JUUL pre-filled pod, but are considering an alternative, here’s some good news. There are JUUL copies that either have JUUL-compatible pods or simply use such pods. Vapor4Life and Eonsmoke, to name a few, even have a similar amount of nicotine.

18. Sales of e-cigarettes nearly doubled from 2019 to 2020.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

Just before the pandemic started, the e-cigarette vs vape battle seemed to be going in the favor of the former. Disposable product sales increased from 10.3% all the way to 19.8% in this time period.

At the same time, sales of products that rely on pre-filled cartridges fell from 89.4% to 80.2%. Therefore, we could say that this was when the popularity of e-cigarettes started rising tremendously. Though, despite that, JUUL is apparently still the most popular vaping product overall.

19. In April 2021, Puff Bar held 51.3% of the disposable device market share.

(Source: Truth Initiative)

This makes it the most popular disposable device, at least in 2021. Vaping statistics list BIDI Stick as the second one, but its market share was just 24%. Make no mistake, that’s still a huge deal, especially considering the previous stat.

Wrap Up

It’s easier to see the truth when all the smoke clears.

Because they keep getting better at resembling real cigarettes, vaping devices are definitely here to stay. Still, many of the vaping statistics above are leading us to believe that vapes might even replace cigarettes. They may not necessarily be healthier, but at least they’re much tastier.

That, plus the fact they’re smoke free, might be the deciding factors in the near future.

Nearer than you think.
