Blogging has evolved a great deal from its early form as an online diary in the 1990s.
The first widespread impact of blogs happened in the political arena around 2002, well before their utility as a business marketing tool was recognized.
Today, whether you are a content creator writing about films for a niche readership or a marketer at a multinational corporation trying to reach a global audience, you know that blogging is one of the most effective tools to engage and influence people.
We put together the most important blogging statistics to hone your marketing strategy in 2026.
Stunning Blogging Statistics (Editor’s Choice):
- WordPress powers 40.2% of all websites and holds a 58.8% share of the CMS market.
- WordPress.com users publish about 70 million posts and 77 million comments every month.
- Globally, there are an estimated 600 million+ blogs, a widely cited estimate, not a measured count.
- 92.4% of content marketers now use AI for blogging.
- The average blog post is 1,312 words long and takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to write.
- Only 13.9% of bloggers say their blog delivers strong results, an all-time low.
- 50% of marketers at businesses with blogs saw blogging ROI rise in 2024.
If there’s one thing these statistics prove, it is that, as a marketer, even as you make use of social media and email marketing to develop leads, you cannot ignore blogging completely.
These statistics also capture critical trends related to how blogging is changing, the kind of content that works, the expectations of blog readers, and the relevance of blogging to B2B commerce.
As always, for easy reading, we have divided the data points into neat categories. We begin with some key general figures, before moving on to how bloggers work today, and finally wrapping up with the most relevant statistics about blogging ROI and business blogging.
Blogging Industry Statistics
1. There are an estimated 600 million+ blogs in the world.
(Source: widely cited industry estimate)
That figure is an estimate, not a measured census, and it sits within a web of roughly 1.4 billion websites. Exact counts are hard to come by because the big platforms have stopped publishing them. Tumblr, for example, last reported a verified total in July 2018 (426 million blog accounts), before its adult content ban and its 2019 sale to Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com.
2. The number of bloggers in the US reached almost 32 million in 2020.
(Source: Statista)
According to Statista, there were close to 32 million active bloggers (those who blog at least once a month) in the US alone in 2020, over 10% of the country’s population. No newer like-for-like count has been published.
3. WordPress powers 40.2% of all websites.
(Source: W3Techs, September 2026)
It also holds 58.8% of the market among sites whose content management system is known. That is well past the “just over a third” it held a few years ago. It is so popular that almost every host these days is creating custom WP hosting plans.
4. WordPress.com users produce about 70 million new posts and 77 million new comments each month.
(Source: WordPress.com)
The posting volume has held steady at around 70 million a month, while monthly comments have risen from about 52 million a few years ago.
5. Over 409 million people view more than 20 billion pages on WordPress.com each month.
(Source: WordPress.com)
These figures are reported by WordPress.com for the sites it hosts or connects through Jetpack, not for every site that runs WordPress software.
Blogging Statistics
6. 92.4% of content marketers use AI for blogging.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Orbit Media’s 2026 survey of 1,042 content marketers found that 92.4% use AI for blogging. AI use itself did not correlate with stronger reported results.
7. Only 4% of bloggers never use AI tools.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Most use AI for editing and outlining. 67% saw their content production increase after folding AI into their workflow. ChatGPT is the most used tool (68%), followed by Google Gemini (50%).
8. Just 13.9% of bloggers say their blog delivers strong results, an all-time low.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Another 18% are unsure whether their blog delivers results at all, up from the 9% to 14% range of earlier years. Blogging still works, but it is harder to stand out than it used to be.
9. 37% of businesses with blogs publish two to three times a week.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Another 30% publish weekly. Orbit Media’s long-running survey shows the opposite drift among individual content marketers, who have shifted toward monthly or less frequent publishing since 2014.
10. 83% of businesses with blogs distribute their content through social media.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Email newsletters and paid ads follow at 47% each. Orbit Media’s data adds a caveat: paid promotion and pitching editors correlate with better results than relying on social media alone.
11. 67% of blogs include data in at least 41% of their content.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Blogs are adapting to Google’s E-E-A-T standards. 42% display author credentials, and 36% source original quotes from experts.
Crafting The Perfect Blog Post
12. The average blog post takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to write.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Time per post climbed for years, peaking at 4 hours and 10 minutes in 2022, and has since fallen back, partly because AI tools now handle some of the work. Bloggers who put six or more hours into a post are still more likely to report strong results.
13. The average blog post is 1,312 words long.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Average length rose for almost a decade, peaked at 1,427 words in 2023, and has since declined. Longer, keyword-focused articles still correlate with better results, but the era of ever-longer posts is over.
14. Bloggers who work with a formal editor are nearly twice as likely to report strong results.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
About 28% of them report strong results, against the 13.9% benchmark. Relying on AI alone for editing scores below the benchmark.
15. Only 7% of bloggers collaborate with influencers, down from 25% in 2017.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
It is one of the most effective tactics in the survey: bloggers who collaborate with influencers are 2.6 times more likely than the benchmark to report strong results.
16. Publishing original research makes strong results 50% more likely.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Even so, fewer bloggers are doing it. Original data gives other sites a reason to link to you, which is something AI-written summaries cannot offer.
17. Posts with two or three visuals have the highest rate of strong results.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Visual appeal engages attention better than plain text, especially where a large number of blogs compete for the reader’s time.
18. Guest blogging fell 29% in a year.
(Source: Orbit Media, 2026 blogger survey)
Keyword research is slipping too. Content marketers are less likely than ever to consider keywords, even though keyword research still correlates with better performance.
Blogging ROI Statistics 2026
19. 50% of marketers at businesses with blogs saw a higher ROI from blogging in 2024 than in 2023.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Half of the marketers surveyed reported that blogging paid off better than the year before, despite the pressure AI-generated search answers are putting on website traffic.
20. 45% said their companies would invest more budget in blogging in 2025.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Between lead generation, brand awareness, SEO, and thought leadership, there are very few areas of marketing that do not benefit from blogging.
21. 56% see the role of blogging expanding in their content strategy.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Blogging increases the chance of a positive return, but most of the benefits materialize only if marketers prioritize it. Content marketing success rarely, if ever, happens by accident.
22. Brand awareness is the top goal of business blogs (66%).
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Customer engagement follows at 53% and lead generation at 49%.
Business Blogging Statistics 2026
23. 65% of marketers work at companies that maintain blogs.
(Source: HubSpot, 2025 State of Blogging)
Most of them describe blogging as important or very important to their overall strategy.
24. 84% of B2B marketers use blogs on corporate websites to distribute content.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
That makes corporate blogs the second most used distribution channel, behind organic social media at 89%. This measures B2B marketers specifically, so it is not comparable with the 65% figure above.
25. 41% of B2B marketers rate corporate website blogs as an effective distribution channel.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
In-person events (52%) and webinars (51%) rate higher, with email and social media at 42% each.
26. 59% of B2B marketers rate their content marketing as at least somewhat effective.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
61% say their content strategy became more effective over the past year. The survey covered 1,015 B2B marketers between June and August 2025.
27. Creating content that prompts action is the top challenge for 40% of B2B marketers.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
A lack of resources (time, people, and budget) follows at 39%, and measuring content effectiveness at 33%.
28. 95% of B2B organizations use AI-powered applications.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
89% use AI tools for content creation, and 45% are prioritizing AI-powered marketing tools in their 2026 budgets. The productivity gains are clear; the gains in content quality and performance are more modest.
29. 32% of B2B marketers plan to increase investment in owned media in 2026.
(Source: Content Marketing Institute, B2B research for 2026)
Owned media, which includes the company blog, remains a priority even as marketers spread their budgets across more channels.
Key Takeaways From Blogging Statistics:
- Blogging remains an effective tool for businesses: half of marketers saw blogging ROI rise, and 45% planned to spend more on it.
- AI is now universal, but it is not a shortcut to results. Human editors, original research, and influencer collaboration are what correlate with strong outcomes.
- Standing out is harder than ever: only 13.9% of bloggers report strong results, so effort and originality matter more, not less.
