The ongoing pandemic changed the daily operations and main forms of communication of nearly all businesses.

With so many people working from home, many entrepreneurs and companies resorted to VoIP services. But how do you choose the one that suits your needs best?

Early on in our research, we came across many Grasshopper reviews - apparently, end users deem it the best VoIP service in 2022.

But is it really?

We at Web Tribunal decided to find the answer the best way we know - through intense scrutiny and thorough testing.

Here are the results.

What Is Grasshopper?

Grasshopper is a VoIP call answering service and phone system that helps entrepreneurs and small businesses. It’s a straightforward solution that allows you to manage your business communications from anywhere in the world.

Grasshopper phone reviews are numerous and users praise different features of the service. Here’s what impressed us and what makes it probably the best VoIP service for small business teams.

Devices and Operating Systems

The Grasshopper app for Windows allows you to access the phone system from your PC or laptop. The Mac version is equally functional.

It is also available for Android and iOS.

The mobile application can also be used to manage calls and do most other things that the desktop app offers.

Plus, it keeps your personal and business calls separate.

Connection Speed

The Grasshopper VoIP service relies on your wireless connection when the cell reception is bad. It could also use your mobile data instead.

But note that the call quality heavily depends on the speed and stability of the connection.

Conference Calling

You can host conference calls, but only with up to ten people.

The downside is that the Grasshopper telephone service requires you to dial all numbers manually and individually in order to add them to a call. They can’t join by themselves.

All Grasshopper pricing plans include a fax service. You can receive faxes on your email and on your Grasshopper apps, but you’ll need an actual fax machine to send your reply.

Call Forwarding

This crucial feature is easy to use, comes at no additional cost, and is often praised by end-users in Grasshopper phone reviews.

You can use it to transfer calls to a colleague’s phone or the office landline. On top of that, different departments and employees can have their own call forwarding rules.

It’s one of the tools that make your virtual Grasshopper office complete.

Custom Greetings

With Grasshopper, you can record a message and set it to play when you receive a call. Alternatively, you can hire a voice actor to record it for you.

Call Recording

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Grasshopper doesn’t have a call recording feature at all at the time of writing this Grasshopper review.

While the lack of some more advanced functionalities is negligible, this one is rather basic, so its absence is quite disappointing.

Hold Music

The Grasshopper hold music default settings allow you to choose between five tunes.

Alternatively, you can pick your own sound. All you have to do is manually upload an mp3 file, name it, and you’re all set.

Vanity Number

If you want your contact info to be easy to recognize and remember, you can get a toll-free vanity number with Grasshopper.

It is also worth noting that you can use up to seven letters or numbers —you’re not just limited to one of these. Some of the toll-free prefixes that you can use are 800, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888.

The few instances when users mention security features in their Grasshopper reviews are to criticize them.

The company complies with Swiss-US and EU-US Privacy Shield regulations regarding customer data, which is excellent.

The problem is that Grasshopper isn’t HIPAA compliant. This means that medical information isn’t as protected as it ideally should be.

Grasshopper has relatively few software integrations, but they should be enough to cover the basic needs of small companies.

The most notable ones are Google Voice and Skype. You can combine them with Grasshopper for call forwarding, inbound, and outbound calling.

You can also connect this VoIP phone service for business users with Google Analytics. We discuss this in more detail in the next section.

The Grasshopper business phone service doesn’t offer any analytics tools of its own. It does, however, fully support Google Analytics.

With it, you can create and track custom events and calls, see which devices people use, and much more.

Plus, the resources section of the website features detailed guides about the setup of the integration and some excellent insight on how to take advantage of the tool.

What We Disliked

Grasshopper is a decent VoIP service, but it is not without its limitations.

Unfortunately, the desktop version of Grasshopper cannot act as a softphone. With this business VoIP phone service, you can only make calls from an existing smartphone and/or landline.

Of course, with more than 350 million VoIP users, the market abounds with other solutions. If having a softphone is a top priority, you can check some of the Grasshopper alternatives below and find the best platform for the purpose.

Screen Sharing

Another downside that is sometimes mentioned in Grasshopper reviews is the lack of screen sharing and video conferencing.

Should you need that, perhaps you’re better off getting GoToConnect, which has both features. Even the team behind Grasshopper recommends it.

Grasshopper Plans & Pricing

This is truly a cheap VoIP and telephone service and that’s the main thing Grasshopper has going for it.

Unfortunately, the Grasshopper free trial is only seven days long, but it includes nearly everything from the paid packages.

It comes with online fax, access to the mobile and desktop apps, call handling, and more.

But you’re limited to 100 minutes and text messages and a single phone number, which can’t be with a premium area code.

The cheapest Grasshopper pricing plan costs only $29 per month or $26 with an annual subscription. Just like its name suggests, it’s intended for one person, as it comes with a single phone number and three extensions. With the extensions, you can forward calls to any phone number you choose, including your own.

This Grasshopper phone plan has a cost of $49 per month or $44 with an annual subscription. It gives you three phone numbers and six extensions. You can choose between local numbers, toll-free, or a mix of both.

For $89 per month or $80, if billed annually, you can get five phone numbers and unlimited extensions. The rest of the features are the same as in the previous plans.

Grasshopper Support

GoTo (formerly LogMeIn), a company that has merged with Citrix and took over Grasshopper, has an extensive knowledge base in its support website.

If you can’t find an answer to your question there, you can open a ticket, call support, or contact the sales team, depending on the nature of your issue. The customer service team is based in the US and is available 24/7.

However, the Grasshopper phone support is problematic, to say the least. Many users complain they didn’t even receive a reply to their messages or calls. The ones who did weren’t quite satisfied with the outcome.

Despite the abundant online guides and resources, the reliability of the Grasshopper support team isn’t its strongest suit.

Ease of Use

Grasshopper is very easy to set up and requires no extra hardware. It has an extremely simple interface and offers straightforward features.

Grasshopper User Reviews

The majority of reviews are positive. Users appreciate Grasshopper for what it is—a straightforward VoIP and phone service for entrepreneurs. Many people praise its low price as well.

A common complaint we noticed in Grasshopper reviews from 2022 is that it’s very hard to cancel the service. Many people have also reported some issues with customer support—lack of response or advice that isn’t useful.

It does not have a subreddit of its own, but the Grasshopper reviews on Reddit are plenty. User opinions there are similar to the Grasshopper VoIP phones reviews on other sites but less negative.

Grasshopper isn’t BBB accredited, and neither is GoTo. The latter has a D- rating from the company and 1/5 stars from the eight user reviews on the website. One of them mentions the poor quality support of Grasshopper.

The Grasshopper ratings on other platforms vary from 1.5 on Yelp to 4.5 stars on Capterra.

Is Grasshopper Worth It?

After careful examination of the Grasshopper pros and cons, we can say with confidence that it lacks advanced features to be the best VoIP service for small business organizations.

The platform lacks call recording and screen sharing. Its biggest downside is the poor quality of the Grasshopper tech support. Still, with its extremely simple setup and interface, you won’t need to resort to it often.

You can test the service with the 7-day free trial or subscribe for a single month to see whether Grasshopper is the right solution for your company.

It is, without a doubt, the best business VoIP and phone service for entrepreneurs and small companies looking for a cheap and easy solution.

Grasshopper Alternatives

Grasshopper is more of a phone system than a VoIP service, so it’s only natural that it lacks certain features.

In this section of the Grasshopper review, you can see how it stacks up against some of the best business VoIP service providers on the market.

Grasshopper vs RingCentral

RingCentral is considered by many the best residential VoIP service in 2022 and one of the best VoIP providers overall.

It offers way more advanced features than Grasshopper, but they are only available at higher pricing tiers. With Grasshopper, you can access nearly everything, even with the free version.

Grasshopper vs Nextiva

Widely considered the best VoIP system, Nextiva is also intended for small businesses. Unlike Grasshopper, though, it is also suitable for medium businesses, which makes it much better for scaling.

If you’re planning on upsizing your company or want to use more advanced features, Nextiva is the obvious choice.

Grasshopper vs GoToConnect

While GoToConnect has an unreliable smartphone application, it’s better than Grasshopper at most other things. For example, it’s more flexible and its customer support is better.

Its biggest downside is that it changes its clients per person, so the overall pricing can get quite expensive.

Final Verdict

According to many Grasshopper phone reviews, the provider offers excellent services at an affordable cost. Our research confirmed that.

The majority of Grasshopper features are basic but are sufficient for most small companies. It is great for call forwarding, creating vanity numbers, and is extremely easy to use, so you won’t have to invest in training.

How does Grasshopper work?

It works with phones and landlines. In other words, you cannot use your computer as a softphone but can do so with a smartphone.

How much is Grasshopper phone service?

It can cost anywhere between $29 and $89 per month. Prices can go even lower if you pick an annual subscription. Read the pricing section above for more details.

How much does Grasshopper really cost?

There are no hidden charges with Grasshopper—all features are included in all plans. In fact, the affordability of the service is a common point of praise in Grasshopper reviews.
