What Is ConvertKit?
Its name sums it up well. ConvertKit is an email marketing solution that gives you everything you need to convert visitors into customers.
It places a lot of emphasis on landing pages and forms for the initial gathering of leads. Its email automation functionalities are core to the follow-up and fostering of customer relations.

ConvertKit doesn’t offer much in the way of email templates. For the most part, constructing an email is DIY.
The program allows you to insert images either by uploading them or by sourcing them from Unsplash or your Instagram page.
You can also insert videos and use dividers to format your email. White labeling is available for paid plans.
As most of the modifications the service allows are text-based, your emails will end up looking quite plain. We circle back to this later in our ConvertKit review.

Landing pages are a focal point for ConvertKit. The ConvertKit email templates may be lackluster, but the landing page and form templates look good.
The preview function is the best we’ve seen—you can cycle through the various templates in an unbroken procession and switch between the mobile and desktop views seamlessly.
The builder is not drag-and-drop. Instead, you modify elements in the page by clicking on “plus” icons.
That said, the templates are somewhat rigid. You won’t be able to reconfigure them entirely, so pick something as close to your desired result as possible when choosing.
ConvertKit does automation very neatly. You can use side-by-side menus to link workflow triggers to actions.
With these, you create fully automated workflows in a visual map editor that places elements in a logical order. No need to worry about disentangling digital spaghetti when you get carried away with what you’re doing.
Automation is only available on paid plans. With a free plan, you’ll be doing most of the legwork. The ability to schedule when emails are sent, however, is available to all.
Split testing for ConvertKit campaigns is quite limited. You can only test two subject line variations and can’t select the “win” condition. The highest open rate dictates the winner.
You can’t select the percentages email will be sent to either. Instead, the software will automatically send each variation to 15% of your audience.
ConvertKit reviews the performance after four hours and sends the winning variant to the remaining 70% of your audience. At least with this method, the testing won’t interrupt your regular activity.
ConvertKit offers analytics for your emails, landing pages, and forms.
On the email front, reports are divided into three categories—new subscribers, total subscribers, and purchases. Both subscriber categories are broken down into average open rate, average click-through rate, and the number of emails sent.
The purchases category shows you total revenue, purchases, average revenue per order, refunds issued, and total refunds in dollars. ConvertKit reviews all of your intake to tally a total.
For third-party analytics, ConvertKit offers integration with Google Analytics and Facebook Pixels.
The service also provides separate analytics for your landing pages and forms, showing visitor and subscriber numbers, as well as conversion rate.
Along with analytics on revenue, ConvertKit has a section dedicated to ecommerce under the “features” tab.
There, you can add your products to create a sales funnel. You start by adding the product’s name, the pricing model (once-off or subscription), the method of paying the ConvertKit cost, and the fulfillment method (digital download, newsletter, etc.). Then, you link a domain where the customer will actually purchase the product.
You can enable payments via Stripe or other integrations. Subscribers who have purchased a product can be tagged to follow up, build trust, and, ultimately, improve customer retention.
Full commerce functionality is not yet available in all countries—you need to check with ConvertKit what you have access to in yours.
Unlike many other services, ConvertKit only allows you to have a single master list. But the software makes up for that with its functional segmentation capabilities.
There are ten presets that you can modify and then place subscribers into. Tagging is also possible.
With these two functions, you can segment your list in any way you desire. ConvertKit is also implementing GDPR functionality.
You can set your ConvertKit autoresponder to automatically apply GDPR compliant elements across all segments or to detect EU IP addresses and apply them to only those subscribers.
An often overlooked feature of email services is deliverability, which is not the same as delivery rate. The delivery rate is the number of your emails reaching subscribers—even those that end up in spam folders.
Deliverability is how much of your mail is making it into inboxes, which is the point of the whole operation. That’s why it’s important to ensure your service of choice has a good deliverability rate.
This metric fluctuates over time, but we’re glad to report that ConvertKit’s deliverability rate in March 2021 was 96%.
What We Disliked
Unfortunately, we don’t live in a tech utopia yet.
So in this part of the ConvertKit review, we discuss the downsides of the service.
As we said earlier, the ConvertKit emails are very plain. In comparison to the aesthetic norm for email marketing, we found that the ones we created with ConvertKit just looked old-fashioned.
The strange thing is that ConvertKit’s landing pages and forms look good—there’s no reason the service can’t give its email creation a similar sheen.
Limited Split Testing
Not only is the split testing limited, as we mentioned above, but the criterion for a winning version isn’t implemented well either.
Tests have a limit of four hours, after which ConvertKit reviews the emails’ performance and sends the winner to the majority of your list.
The problem is that the “losing” variation can, and sometimes does, overtake the winner later.
If users could set their own time limit, they’d be better equipped to maximize their output early on rather than having to wait for the next broadcast.
ConvertKit Pricing Plans
ConvertKit keeps it streamline with two paid plans and a free version. Plans can be billed monthly, but ConvertKit offers a discount for annual payments, giving you two months for free.
The Free Plan allows you to create landing pages, broadcast emails, split tests, and segments. It doesn’t offer integrations or automation.
The Creator Plan includes everything mentioned in the review, as well as free migration from another email service.
The Creator Pro plan provides everything mentioned, plus advanced reporting and Facebook custom audiences for continuous advertising to your leads.
All plans start at 300 subscribers and no daily send limits. To increase the number of subscribers, you have to pay roughly $10-$20 per additional one thousand.
ConvertKit Customer Service
We found the customer service great.
We had some specific questions about send limits. The responses to our inquiries arrived in minutes and the support agents were very helpful and noticeably enthusiastic.
The ConvertKit support agent confirmed that there aren’t any send limits and that you’re only limited by the number of subscribers you’re allowed to have.

To get a broader view of other people’s experiences, we checked out some user reviews. They’re mostly positive—ConvertKit holds a rating of 4.5 stars on G2 and 4.7 stars on Capterra.
Praise focuses on the utility and design of the landing pages. Like us, customers also appreciate how neat and straightforward the creation of automation is.
The most common criticism is regarding the cost of the service and the simplicity of the emails. The occasional ConvertKit review on Reddit mainly focuses on comparing the platform to other services.
Is ConvertKit Worth It?
ConvertKit’s automation capabilities are its main claim to fame and at the core of its email automation service.
That said, the solution is a little pricey compared to many of its competitors. Plus, automation isn’t available with the ConvertKit free plan. To get the service’s best features, you’ll have to pay up.
The plainness of the emails and the limited split testing may put some people off. But if you have the funds and want solid email automation, ConvertKit is a great choice.

GetResponse is a great cheap autoresponder, but it doesn’t have a free plan.
Pound for pound, it offers more in terms of customization options and workflow. Plus, it has an app.
If you want a free service, go with ConvertKit. Otherwise, GetResponse is a better choice.
ConvertKit vs AWeber
AWeber is cheaper overall, but its free plan is less generous than that of ConvertKit. With it, you’ll get no split testing and a subscriber limit of 500—half of what ConvertKit offers.
ConvertKit is the best free autoresponder for 2022, but if you want a paid plan, weigh up the prices of the two services.
AWeber is noticeably cheaper and, unlike ConvertKit, has a mobile app.
Constant Contact vs ConvertKit
Constant Contact offers website building and web hosting. It’s also the slightly cheaper option in the short run.
On bigger plans, however, ConvertKit overtakes it, being the more economical option.
If website building is a must for you, consider Constant Contact.
Otherwise, ConvertKit has WordPress integration for web purposes and is, therefore, the cheaper choice.
Our Final Verdict
ConvertKit is an excellent email autoresponder and ecommerce solution. It’s a little pricier than other services, plus its email customization needs some updating. But if you need solid technical form and function, it’s a great choice.
