How to Make Scaffolding in Minecraft?

Updated · Oct 07, 2022

Scaffolding is an important part of the construction process in Minecraft. It allows you to safely reach high places and create structures that would be otherwise impossible.

These interlocking blocks and platforms provide a sturdy framework upon which anything can be built.

In this guide, we'll show you everything you need to know about Minecraft scaffolding and how to use it in your next project.

Let's get started!

What Is Scaffolding in Minecraft?

Scaffolding is a block used to build platforms upwards or sideways. It can be placed on the ground, in water, and in Java, even in lava for a while.

Players can safely climb up or down the ladder-like construction to reach higher places.

Unlike most blocks in the game, when you break one, all others on top of it will break too, making it perfect for temporary constructions.

How to Make Scaffolding in Minecraft?

It's a simple process, but you'll need to collect a few resources first.

1. Gather String and Bamboo

Bamboo is found in tropical biomes, and you can grow it yourself once you have some. Using a bone meal will speed up the farming process.

Next, obtain a string by killing spiders and striders or breaking cobwebs.

2. Follow the Scaffolding Recipe

Once you have the required materials, open your crafting table.

Place six bamboo blocks in all slots of the first and third column and add the string in the middle of the first row. That will give you six scaffolding blocks.

How to Use Scaffolding Minecraft?

Scaffolding behaves a bit differently from other building materials, so you'll need to consider a few things:

When you click on the side of a scaffolding block to place another one, it’ll automatically go on top. However, if you press on its upper side, the new piece will attach itself to the side in the direction you're looking at.

Alternatively, you can place the scaffolding in Minecraft on the side of a block by clicking on it while sneaking.

What's more, if you have a tall stack of scaffolding, to add it on top of the highest one, you only need to right-click on the foundation without having to climb up. That goes all the way to the build limit of 256 blocks high.

Keep in mind that you can only put six pieces of Minecraft scaffolding sideways from its support base. If you try to add more, they’ll just fall down. You can add another support point and keep on building.

You need to press the jump button continuously to go up your scaffolding construction. Similarly, to climb down, use the sneak button.

A fun fact is that villagers can climb scaffolding if they come across it in their path. Also, mobs can spawn on the scaffolding construction.

What Is Scaffolding Used for in Minecraft?

Scaffolding is most commonly used to build towers, but it has a few other handy applications:

  • Temporary bridges to cross gaps or lava
  • Walkways
  • Traps containing hazardous materials
  • Fuel source
  • Decorations — picnic table, aquarium, chair, shelving
  • Inside elevators

To Wrap Up

Knowing how to make scaffolding in Minecraft is an essential skill.

With its easy recipe and fascinating applications, it's no wonder this block is one of the most popular in the game.

Now go and put your new scaffolding skills to good use!
