How to Make an Anvil in Minecraft?

Updated · Mar 04, 2023

Anvils are a key part of Minecraft.

They're used to repair tools and other items, as well as to create custom names for anything you like.

They can be found in the world or crafted by the player.

Once you have one at your disposal, you'll see a wide variety of enhancement options available.

Keep reading to find out all about the anvil recipe and how to make the best out of your new creation.

What Is an Anvil in Minecraft?

An anvil is a block that allows players to repair, rename, and enchant items.

It's a versatile tool, but it degrades over time.

More specifically, every time you use it, there's a 12% chance the anvil will get damaged.

It'll handle about 25 uses on average before it breaks down — first, it'll become chipped and then damaged.

Anvils can't be repaired, so you'll need to craft a new one every time.

How to Make an Anvil in Minecraft?

To craft this tool, you have to do the following:

1. Collect Iron Ore and Fuel

You'll find iron by mining underground — look for gray blocks with pinkish specks.

You need 31 iron ores to make an anvil.

Then, gather coal, charcoal, or wood for furnace fuel.

2. Smelt the Iron Into Ingots

Place your iron ore in the furnace and fuel it up.

Wait for all of it to smelt, and you'll be ready to proceed.

3. Make Iron Blocks

You'll need to place one iron ingot in all slots of the crafting grid, a total of nine, to produce a single iron block.

Keep going until you have three.

4. Follow the Anvil Recipe

Now it's time to put everything together.

Place in the crafting grid:

  • One iron block in every slot of the first row
  • One iron ingot in the very center of the grid
  • One ingot in every slot of the third row

How to Use an Anvil in Minecraft?

Anvils have three primary purposes:

Repairing — You can fix tools, armor, and weapons by combining two of the same item or using the material it's made from.

For example, if you want to repair an iron pickaxe, you should add either another damaged pickaxe or iron — every ingot you use will recover 25% of the item's durability.

Renaming — Minecraft anvil is helpful for labeling tools and armor, so you know which is which, or just for fun. You can also name mobs with a name tag and an anvil.

Enchanting — To do that, you'll need to place on the anvil an enchanted book and the item you want to enhance.

Where to Find an Anvil in Minecraft?

You may discover a damaged anvil in the Forge room of a woodland mansion.

You can set up a server and go exploring by yourself or with friends.

If you come across the tool and want to collect it, keep in mind that it can only be mined with a pickaxe, otherwise, it won't drop itself.

To Wrap Up

Knowing how to make an anvil in Minecraft will come in handy, as it's a block with many functions.

It requires quite a lot of iron to craft, but it pays off once you start enhancing your items.

Try it out for yourself and see how you can put this essential block to good use!
