How to Make Use of Amethyst Shards in Minecraft?

Updated · Oct 11, 2022

Amethyst shards are a valuable material in Minecraft.

They aren't as common as other resources but are still fairly easy to obtain if you know where to look.

In this guide, we'll explain what these shards are and how to get them. We'll also cover the crafting recipes you need them for.

Let's get started!

What Is an Amethyst Shard in Minecraft?

Amethysts are purple-colored crystals with which you can create a bunch of items. An amethyst shard is a small piece of a larger cluster.

Amethyst geodes are located underground between Y -64 and Y 30.

They consist of:

  • An outer layer of smooth basalt
  • A middle layer of calcite
  • A hollow layer of amethyst blocks

In most cases, geodes have a crack, allowing access to their inner part.

While the regular Minecraft amethyst blocks are only for decoration, there's an 8.3% chance to find budding amethyst blocks instead.

Amethyst crystals spawn only on budding amethyst and have four growth stages:

  1. Small amethyst bud
  2. Medium bud
  3. Large bud
  4. Cluster

Now that you know what you're looking for, let's discuss how to obtain amethyst in Minecraft.

How to Collect Amethyst in Minecraft?

There's no way for you to make amethyst, so you'll have to find it in the open world.

1. Find an Amethyst Geode

There are two easy ways to do that — explore underground caves or underwater.

We recommend going into the game settings and making your position visible on the screen.

Once the middle value (Y) is 64 or a higher number, you should start looking around for the geode's outer layer of smooth basalt.

You can also set up a server and have your friends join you in your chase of a Minecraft amethyst shard.

Drinking a Potion of Night Vision will help you see better in the dark and underwater.

2. Mine an Amethyst Cluster in Minecraft

When you go inside the geode, look around for budding amethyst.

If you find an amethyst crystal in the fourth growth stage (cluster), mine it with any type of pickaxe, and it'll drop four shards.

And that's it; repeat the steps until you collect as many shards as you need.

Remember not to use a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment, as you'll get nothing because the budding amethyst block isn't obtainable in Survival mode.

How to Make Use of Amethyst Shards in Minecraft?

You may craft a few items with different applications with the shards.

Make a Block of Amethyst

While you can't make shards out of an amethyst block, the reverse is possible.

Placing four shards in a two-by-two square on the crafting grid will make one amethyst block.

You can use it for building and decoration.

Make a Spyglass

Spyglass is an item that helps you see long distances.

You'll need one Minecraft amethyst shard and two copper ingots to craft it.

First, mine copper ore underground and then smelt it in a furnace to make ingots.

Once that's done, place it on the crafting table:

  • A shard in the middle of the first row
  • A copper ingot directly below it
  • Another copper ingot just under the first

Make Tinted Glass

Tinted glass is a type of glass that blocks light used for decoration and construction purposes.

You'll have to gather four MC amethyst shards and a glass block to craft it.

Open your crafting table and arrange the materials in the following pattern:

  • The glass block in the very center of the grid
  • One shard on each side of the glass

To Wrap Up

While you can't make amethyst shards in Minecraft, you can obtain them relatively easily.

If you need a spyglass or some tinted glass, you'll have to go exploring until you come across a geode.

That's a good reason to see what the world around has to offer and enjoy the adventure along the way.
